How to build a successful proxy site

What is a proxy site? This is a shortcut way to access the websites that usually have been blocked by network filters. The proxy sites are mostly used by people to access sites such as MiniClip, MySpace, YouTube, etc. The great news about building a proxy is that:

It is easy to build – a person who knows what he/she is doing can get a proxy website built in as little as two hours; if your internet connection is good you could do it even faster than that.

It requires no maintenance – once the link has been put in and it is working, you need not go back to it again ever.

It can be a lovely piggy bank for you – a very ordinary proxy can earn sufficiently to pay for the hosting in about 6-7 days.

Setting the Proxy Site Up

Domain name - It is good to keep in mind when you are setting it up, to avoid the name “proxy” from its name, as the majority networks would block it. You may look up alternative names such as ‘blocked’, ‘bypass’, ‘unblock’ or even an ordinary other word, which may not mean anything in relation to a proxy. A good trick is to remember is that you need not add .com to your proxy (unless you are building it for viral marketing purpose) – you may use the .info for best results.

Hosting – you will need a virtual private server when you host proxy server because the proxy would be blocked out from a shared host. There are many virtual servers, which will give you great service even if they are a little costlier than the other servers are. Expect a bill of $40-50 per month for this service.

Get your proxy networked – Having a proxy for only one site is unthinkable. You will need to network it with as many sites you would need – the more you have the better. The best is to get the linking to all the proxy sites you have. Then you have a choice – (i) let it run and earn for you, or (ii) sell it for high profit, and then start again from scratch.

The right script – you have a choice between two major free scripts, i.e. PHProxy and the CGI Proxy. The PHProxy is great for those who are conscious about the cost. The downside is that it consumes a lot of bandwidth. The CGI Proxy on the other hand, uses more resources but very little bandwidth. Both are excellent – so your choice would depend upon the resource you have available and your particular needs.

Design of the proxy – when you do it, go all the way out. You usually try to highlight your URL and have the name of the domain large enough to jump at you when you see it. Have the ‘access’ button large as well as these are the pull ons. Use Adobe Photoshop for fancy designing, (though you do not need it) – if you are in this and you have time. In case you go for proxy custom designs, then be ready to dole out some US $10-25 every week.

  1. May I add…

Monetize: add your proxy to goodwaiter and proxy.org. That alone will make your proxy profitable.

  2. I’m sure I’ll review the benefits of proxy.org and goodwaiter in the next article. :)
